Future Technology

Our technology is changing everyday.

Autonomous driving - the future of mobility

At Volkswagen Group, we consistently focus on innovation and are actively shaping the future of autonomous vehicle technology. Our goal is to take advantage of autonomous driving while ensuring high safety standards. We have been testing the autonomously driving ID. Buzz for over three years.  We are collaborating with a development partner that is offering a highly scalable approach to technology and is already achieving impressive driving performances.

We are using Volkswagen Group subsidiary MOIA, a ridesharing service running in Hamburg and Hanover since 2019,  as a test basis for autonomous driving.

Battery technology

Volkswagen’s unique MEB platform (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) allows current Volkswagen ID models' fast charging battery system to be integrated into the floor of the vehicle to save space. This also lowers the centre of gravity, creating a better distribution of weight so you can enjoy exceptionally well balanced and dynamic driving.

Volkswagen Group is helping to develop the technologies that it hopes will be the successors of today's lithium-ion batteries. The Group has a share in the American start-up QuantumScape, among others, which is a pioneer in the field of solid-state batteries. A solid-state battery contains a solid electrolyte rather than a liquid one, and hopes are that it will enable significantly longer ranges to be achieved.

The U.S. company QuantumScape has recently reached an important milestone, which was confirmed by PowerCo, the battery company of the Volkswagen Group: its solid-state cell has significantly exceeded the requirements in the A-sample test and successfully completed more than 1,000 charging cycles. For an electric car with a WLTP range of 500-600 kilometres, this corresponds to a total mileage of more than half a million kilometres (over 310,000 miles).

Chat GPT and a Wellness App

Future models within the Commercial Vehicles lineup will include Chat GPT integration (AI/ artificial intelligence). Another new feature which is coming to the UK later this year is a brand-new Wellness App for ID. Buzz which uses preconfigured programmes to adjust various functions to improve well-being while driving or charging.
