Maximising your range

5 simple tips to make the most of your charge

Several factors can influence your electric vehicle’s range, such as your speed and driving style, the type of road you’re on, the outside temperature, the use of air conditioning and the load your carrying. Let’s take a look at a few easy ways to extend your distance between charges, saving you time and money.

Tip 1

Moderating your speed

Driving at a steady speed and avoiding hard braking or sudden acceleration can help to maximise range. With electric vehicles, an easygoing driving style goes a long way.

Tip 2

Capturing wasted energy

Volkswagen electric vehicles recharge the battery using regenerative braking. When you slow down, the vehicle automatically uses the wheels to run the motor in reverse, turning the kinetic energy, (the energy of movement) from braking into electricity, which is then stored in the battery. The more you slow down, the further you can go.

Tip 3

Keep track of your tyres

Underinflated tyres can significantly reduce your range. To get the most from your charge, be sure to keep them inflated to the recommended pressure.

Tip 4

Prepare while plugged in

Just like petrol or diesel vehicles, heating and air conditioning can reduce efficiency. To save energy while driving, you can use We Connect, which allows you to use your smartphone to preheat or pre-cool your electric vehicle remotely while it’s plugged in.

Tip 5

Use onboard technology

Volkswagen electric vehicles come with a range of built-in technologies designed to help maximise your range. This includes an easy-to-use battery management system and a charge map that prevents overcharging by regulating energy flow into the battery. For longer journeys, the EV Route Planner maps out your route ensuring there’s always a public charger when and where you need one.

Bonus tip: Providing charging points in the workplace makes it much easier and more appealing for employees to drive electric vehicles. Plus, there’s a government initiative that is currently offering businesses up to £350Opens an external link for each charging point installed.
