Volkswagen California takes on the NC500 in Scotland
On the road with YouTube and Instagram influencers North South Travels
The NC500 is one of the most famous road trips in the UK, taking in the stunning Scottish Highlands. And with plenty of campsites and roadside stop-offs, it’s the perfect place for our iconic California.
Ahead of the summer holidays, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sent YouTube and Instagram influencers – and self-confessed ‘Van Life’ novices - North South Travels to experience the NC500 and report back on how to do it in style.
Armed with the instruction manual, food supplies, and plenty of recommendations, Corinne, River, and baby Mila set off from Inverness on a two-week road trip, taking in John O’Groats, the Isle of Skye, Loch Lomond and the Glenfinnan Viaduct – now better known as the Hogwarts Express bridge in Harry Potter.
As rookie ‘Van Lifers’, Corinne and River had their fair share of 'learnings' along the way but loved every minute! You can watch their full trip here
Van Life is something we have fantasised about for a long time; visions of us all packed inside a van with epic views greeting us round every corner.North South Travels
The Volkswagen California proved the perfect companion for the NC500, covering each mile in its stride and doubling up as a home-away-from-home at both camp sites where the North South Travels family could hook up to power, gas, and water supply, as well as on the remote wild camping stop-offs, where the on-board power kept them comfortable.
Corrine and River made plenty of use of the California’s portable table and chairs too, setting up for breakfast overlooking the incredible highlands and lochs. Cooking was a breeze on the in-built gas stove, with plenty of supplies stored in the fridge/freezer. For their full review of the Volkswagen California, visit
If you’re toying with the idea of trying Van Life or of visiting the NC500, all we would say is - DO IT. Truly one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been - if we could do it again, we’d go in a heartbeat!North South Travels
