ID. Buzz parked in front of the Electric Sunshine installation

Electric sunshine

What do we all need after the winter break? In the middle of cold, grey January? More specifically on ‘Blue Monday’, considered to be the saddest day of the year?

Sunshine.

Sadly, unless you jet off to sunnier climes, there’s none about when we need it the most.

That’s why Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles created some sunshine. Well, some electric sunshine.

Using the same SAD lamp tech used in the lamps available to buy for our homes, we created a billboard made out of them. A giant electric SAD lamp made up of lots of smaller SAD lamps, and all powered by 100% renewable energy from Green Voltage UK. And so we created a light that mimics the sun and its positive, mood-lifting effects to illuminate a cold, overcast January day with some very welcome vitamin D.

Positioned at Sutton Walk bridge, near Waterloo station, commuters and passers-by were able to pause in front of the billboard and give themselves a little recharge under the light of the (electric) sun.

All of this was inspired by the new, all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz. With its heritage steeped in the sunny Sixties, this van has sunshine in its DNA.  The ID. Buzz is fully electric, so we thought it only fitting to use it as a source of positive energy.

Collaborating with a talented team of engineers and designers, this was the first billboard of its kind, emanating light made entirely from SAD lamp technology.

Watch the film to see how Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles made Blue Monday a little less blue.
